Ayatollah Khamenei: The Supreme Leader of Iran

Ali Hoseyni Khamenei: A Biography

Ali Hoseyni Khamenei, pronounced ʔæˈliː hosejˈniː xɒːmeneˈʔiː, is an Iranian cleric and politician who served as president of Iran from 1981 to 1989 and as the country's supreme leader since 1989. He has ruled Iran for twice as long as Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran. As supreme leader, Khamenei is the highest authority in Iran, with ultimate control over all branches of government and the armed forces.

Khamenei's Early Life and Education

Khamenei was born on July 15, 1939, in Mashhad, Iran. He studied Islamic jurisprudence and theology in Qom, Iran, and became a prominent figure in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. After the revolution, Khamenei served in various government positions, including president of Iran from 1981 to 1989. In 1989, he was appointed supreme leader by the Assembly of Experts, a body of clerics that elects the supreme leader.

Khamenei's Political Views and Policies

Khamenei is a conservative cleric who adheres to the principles of the Islamic Revolution. He has been a strong supporter of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its policies, including the nuclear program and the support for Hezbollah and Hamas. Khamenei has also been critical of the United States and other Western powers, accusing them of interfering in Iran's affairs. In recent years, Khamenei has taken a more active role in foreign policy, meeting with foreign leaders and speaking out on international issues.

Khamenei's Health and Succession

Khamenei's health has been the subject of much speculation in recent years. He has had several surgeries and has been hospitalized on several occasions. In 2014, he underwent prostate surgery, and in 2016, he was hospitalized for a heart condition. Despite his health issues, Khamenei has remained active in his role as supreme leader.

The question of Khamenei's succession remains unanswered. He has not appointed a successor, and there is no clear frontrunner to replace him. The Assembly of Experts will ultimately be responsible for electing a new supreme leader when Khamenei dies or is incapacitated.
